About the Department

The Department of English at Ghaghra Science College, Bagodar functions under the Faculty of Arts and plays a vital role in promoting literary awareness, language proficiency, and critical thinking among students. The Department was established in the year 2021 and has since contributed significantly to undergraduate education in English Language and Literature in the region.

Affiliated to Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag, the Department offers undergraduate programmes aligned with the evolving academic framework of higher education. Over the years, the department has transitioned through various academic reforms including the Three-Year Degree Course (TYDC), Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), and the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) under NEP–2020.

The Department aims to nurture students’ intellectual growth, linguistic competence, and interpretative skills through a balanced engagement with classical, modern, and contemporary literary texts. H.O.D. Mr. Syed Md. Feroz is doing his best to keep students motivated and updated with recent developments in English language and literature apart from providing academic and soft spoken English language.

Course Structure

The Department follows the curriculum prescribed by Vinoba Bhave University under the NEP–2020 framework.

  • English Major (Honours): Covers Major papers from Semester I to Semester VIII, including core literary studies, language papers, and advanced courses.
  • English Minor & Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC): Designed for students from other disciplines to acquire functional and academic English skills.
  • Skill & Ability Enhancement Courses: Includes Academic Writing, Communication Skills, Research Methodology, and Composition.

Evaluation is conducted through a combination of internal assessment and end-semester university examinations, as per university guidelines.

Infrastructure & Learning Resources

  • A dedicated classroom equipped with a lecture desk, blackboard, and ICT support (subject to availability).
  • Access to English books, reference materials, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and journals through the central library.

After completing the undergraduate programme in English, students are expected to:

  • Pursue postgraduate studies, professional courses, or competitive examinations.

Each year, a significant number of students opt for M.A. in English, B.Ed., and competitive exams, while others secure employment in both government and private sectors or engage in self-employment.
